Copyright and Open Access

Copyright and Open Access
For all articles published in Global Perspectives on People, Power, and History (GPPPH), copyright is retained by the authors. Articles are published under an open access Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 4.0). This allows anyone to freely download, read, and share the article. In addition, the work may be reused, adapted, and quoted provided that the original published version is properly cited. These conditions ensure maximum visibility and impact of the work while guaranteeing that authors receive appropriate credit for their contributions.

Reproducing Published Material from Other Sources
Authors must obtain permission to reproduce any published material including figures, tables, schemes, or text excerpts that does not fall in the public domain or for which they do not hold copyright. Permission should be requested from the copyright holder, usually the publisher. Check the imprint of the publication to identify the copyright owner.

Permission is required for:

  • Material published by other publishers where the author does not retain copyright
  • Substantial extracts from another’s work or series of works
  • Use of tables, graphs, charts, schemes, or artworks if unaltered or only slightly modified
  • Photographs for which the author does not hold copyright

Permission is NOT required for:

  • Reconstruction of tables using previously published data, provided the source is cited as “Data from…” or “Adapted from…”
  • Short quotations that fall under fair use
  • Graphs, charts, schemes, or artworks fully redrawn by the author and significantly modified

Obtaining Permission
Authors are advised to secure permissions as early as possible to avoid delays in publication. If there is any uncertainty regarding copyright, it is the author’s responsibility to obtain the necessary permissions. GPPPH cannot publish material from other sources without explicit permission.

Acknowledgment Style
Unless the copyright holder specifies a required format, acknowledgments should follow this style:

“Reproduced with permission from [Author], [Book/Journal Title]; published by [Publisher], [Year].”
Place this statement at the end of the caption of the Table, Figure, or Scheme.
