Politics of Sufism in Chiniot: A Case Study of Muhammadi Sharif (1947-1975)
Muhammad Hussan
Abstract:
This paper aims to examine the politics of Sufism in District Chiniot with primary focus on the case study of Muhammadi Sharif from 1947 to 1975. It argues that Sufism in Chiniot was not confined to personal spirituality and devotional practices. It served as an important moral, social, and political force in the public sphere. The study finds the historical evolution of the spiritual lineage of Muhammadi Sharif and highlights the institutional development, moral legitimacy, symbolic authority, and public trust with religious guidance, educational services, and social reform. Muhammadi Sharif, rooted in the Suhrawardi and Chishtia traditions, extended Sufi leadership from khanqah into political life. This research primarily highlights the role of Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Zakir and other Sufi leaders of Muhammadi Sharif in challenging feudal domination in the politics of Chiniot after the creation of Pakistan. It also highlights how Muhammadi Sharif integrated ethical political engagement with educational reform, public welfare, and public service. Hence, it fostered a participatory political culture in post-Partition Punjab together with the development of democratic consciousness and broader socio-political transformation.
