Abstract:
Type 1 Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which insulin deficiency occurs in body due to absence or death of beta cells in the pancreas. Whereas, in type 2 diabetes mellitus, actual cause is insulin resistance that is accompanied by obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Diabetes can lower healthy HDL cholesterol levels and increase triglyceride and LDL levels, thus elevating the risk of heart disease and stroke. This specific disorder is known as diabetic dyslipidemia. It can lead to coronary heart failure and atherosclerosis in patients. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to investigate the association between lipid disorders and diabetes mellitus. For this purpose, 300 subjects including healthy and those diagnosed with diabetes were investigated. Data for diabetics were collected from 7 different hospitals of District Chakwal, and the history of patients was recorded by filling a questionnaire. The fasting blood samples were collected from these patients. The subjected patients were not on anti-cholesterol medication. The blood samples of these selected patients were analyzed for lipid profile along with blood fasting sugar and hemoglobin. The mean age for male and female patients was 53.47±12.07 mg/dl. The positive association between HbA1c and total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoproteins and low-density lipoprotein was found. The correlation between HDL and HbA1c was significant. Patients with diabetes had substantially higher cholesterol, LDL-C and LDL-C / HDL-C ratio than patients with HbA1c value of up to or below 7.0mg/dl?. Dyslipidemia treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus can serve as a preventive measure against cardiovascular diseases.
