Exploring an Innovative Pedagogical Framework for Sustainable Digital Literacy Education through AI-Integrated Blended Learning Approaches
Fakhar Ul Zaman, Dr. Muhammad Anwer
Abstract:
This study aims to develop a new teaching framework for sustainable digital literacy education through AI-integrated blended learning in higher education. As the digital world evolves constantly, it has become imperative for students to acquire digital literacy as soon as possible. However, the students are not equipped with the technical, cognitive and ethical skills necessary to engage with digital technology sustainably through conventional instructional methods. The purpose of this research is to identify the key components of a framework, to investigate the effect of an artificial intelligence-integrated blended learning on students’ digital literacy increase, and to recommend tailored and sustainable implementation. A qualitative research design was conducted using a semi-structured interview with 12 faculty members and 24 undergraduate students. The study’s respondents include the students and faculty members selected from the Department of Education, English, Mass Communication & Media (MCM), and Psychology of the University of Narowal. Participants were purposefully selected to draw from the insight of educators and learners familiar with digital environments. Manual data analysis applied thematic analysis for identifying the themes and sub-themes with respect to pedagogical strategies, integration of AI, and development of digital literacy. Findings have indicated that AI-integrated blended learning enhances students' technical skills, critical thinking aspects, engagement behavior, and ethics. The sustainable framework has a structured instructional design, professional development of teachers, access to digital resources, and formative assessment with the support of artificial intelligence tools. The above goals could be successfully met by adopting an integrated approach towards the development of digital literacy policies and other relevant frameworks. This article basically recommends developing sustainable, effective, and learner-oriented digital literacy policies and other guidelines.
